Chapter Nine
Jensen breathed hard as he sprinted down the tunnel. It was an impressive feat of engineering, he had to give them that, but it hurt more than he wanted to admit to run with a chunk of shrapnel in his liver. He grunted as the green light came on ahead and a door swung open. A man in outdated camo pants waved the last group of slave-workers in frantically.
As impressive as the tunnel was, the fact that the resistance of Washington had dug a tunnel and hidden it in one of the earthquake shelters was even more impressive. Jensen reached the open door and winced in pain as the metal that had shredded through his guts shifted painfully into his bones.
Juliessa paused next to him and frowned. âAre you all right?â She asked, touching the bandage sheâd placed over the wound.
âYeah.â He grunted.
Jorge poked his head out and tapped his watch. âThomas is late.â He said, then looked back as the last of the survivors made their way into the tunnel. Ten resistance members had remained behind, planning to join the attack on Naval Station Kitsap.
âYeah, he is.â Jensen said. Jorge frowned.
âYou donât look good, man.â Caleb said, stepping forward. It was rich coming from a pale-skinned redhead that looked like he hadnât seen the sun in ten years.
Jensen gritted his teeth and stood up straighter. âWe could wait for him at the boat, now that everyone is out.â Theyâd pilfered blocks of C4 from dead Iranian soldiers and then destroyed half of the stadium as a diversion while the resistance fought in their antique planes overhead. It had all come together nicely, but hundreds of civilians lie dead or dying in the streets as theyâd fled for freedom.
And a grenade had taken Jensen off his feet and nearly killed him with a blast of shrapnel.
Juliessa had a cut on her cheek from flying debris and had lot of her hair scorched away in the fireball that had nearly killed Jensen. Price had opted to stay with the children, and Jorge looked like he would die of anxiety at any moment.
âWe need to go.â One of the resistance soldiers grunted. âWe canât wait forever.â
âThomas is up there with OâDell,â Juliessa snapped. âYouâll fucking wait until we tell you to move.â
The larger man glowered but didnât have anything else to say, maybe it was fear of the tiny black-haired girl, or maybe it was genuine respect that a single man had gone against the stronghold.
âDonât hold back on my account.â Came a voice from behind Jensen. âPlease, slap him senseless.â It was Thomas, walking down the tunnel, his rifle swinging against his tactical vest as he strode.
âWhat took you so long, man?â Jorge asked, cracking a wide grin.
âTraffic.â Thomas replied.
âIs she dead?â Juliessa asked.
âI hope so. I donât want to meet the person that can survive a seven hundred foot drop out of a high rise.â Thomas said. âIs the boat ready?â
âYeah, butâ¦â Jorge looked at Jensen, and Thomas turned to his old friend, then spotted the bandage.
